Each Egyptian Paste bead and pendant is hand made and hand drilled therefore every piece is unique and will vary slightly even if repeated.
Other components used are carnelian, gold-filled beads, gold-filled fasteners (carnelian and gold were commonly used in ancient Egyptian jewellery) and vermeil beads and pendants.
Gold-filled is a quality alternative to solid gold. A layer of gold is pressure bonded to another metal and is typically 5% of its total weight. With reasonable wear it should last a lifetime.
Vermeil is gilded silver or Sterling Silver which has a coating of gold.
The fly pendants were used in the Middle Kingdom possibly as military awards but it is thought that they became popular amongst courtiers. The fly may have represented 'tenacity'.
